Is it OK to take birth control to avoid cancer?

I am not Catholic, buy hope to be by next year. I was wondering, concerning birth control pills, what if you are using it to try and avoid a certain type of female cancer that is Dr. recommended? How does this affect my becoming a Catholic? This cancer has struck 3 immediate family members and one has passed very recently. Any help is appreciated.
