Is it okay to ask for your property back from a robber?

The right thing is not to do anything that endangers your own life or your family’s.
Property can be replaced.
 
To the extent that thistle is saying “Act prudently”, that is correct. If asking for your property back falls within the ambit of prudence under a given set of circumstances, go for it.
 
Now under what conditions should you so ask?

I mean, if it is your property, you shouldn’t have to ask so I figure the only truthful way of going about getting it back is by force, but again what conditions should generally imply asking for it back?
 
One circumstance could be as simple as the robber is sitting in jail while you come in to make an identification. It wouldn’t hurt to ask then what he did with the loot. There are probably thousands of other situations where it wouldn’t hurt to ask either as there are so many variables to take into account when conducting the prudence analysis.
 
Tell the police and see what they can do. You do not need to fear when you are the victim. Fear is worse than evil because you allow it to happen. Would you prefer to allow them to continue stealing?

Well you certainly don’t ask when he’s pointing a gun at you or your family.
A bit of common sense is needed.

If you have been robbed and know who did it, then turn them into the police. They will recovery the stolen goods and return them to you.
 
Thistle, I disagree! All of my family is deceased & what they left behind as personal mementos [Mom’s wedding ring, Grandma’s pearls, the gun my Dad carried in WW2] CANNOT be replaced! The better question is: is it immoral to make a thief have to kill you to take these irreplaceable items “over my dead body”???

I don’t understand this. If someone is threatening to kill you unless you give them property, either give it to them or, if you think they will kill you anyway, defend yourself. Why in the world would you MAKE them kill you to take your property??? Not only are you giving up your life for property, no matter the significance, but you are also adding another mortal sin to what they have committed. Why would you “make” someone kill you and therefore commit murder?

But that is still just “stuff”. Things. Material things.

None of those things are as valuable as human life. None of those things are worth dying over.

Material things, even the ones you mention and even if they are lost forever, are NOT worth dying for or making someone else kill for. My personal view is that if you deliberately make someone shoot you over material things you are committing a grave sin.
Do you honestly think your mum would want you to die for her wedding ring???
 
I suppose if you have nice sharp sword he may give it back nicely…
 
I’m pretty sure that if the robber has already sold my flatscreen TV to a fence and can’t pay me back for the goods he stole, I get to keep him as a slave, or I can sell the burglar as a slave to someone else to earn money to buy myself a new flatscreen TV, per Exodus Chapter 22:

“Whoever steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it must pay back five head of cattle for the ox and four sheep for the sheep.

“If a thief is caught breaking in at night and is struck a fatal blow, the defender is not guilty of bloodshed; but if it happens after sunrise, the defender is guilty of bloodshed.

“Anyone who steals must certainly make restitution, but if they have nothing, they must be sold to pay for their theft. If the stolen animal is found alive in their possession—whether ox or donkey or sheep—they must pay back double.
