I am proud to call myself a devout Catholic and I haven’t got the slightest intention of converting to Protestantism. Would it be morally wrong for me to attend a Nondemoninational Christian Apologetics Class? (but not Catholic) A couple of people I know are offering them. I don’t want to take them, but would it be a sin for me to do so? Any thoughts on this? Thank You!!! 🙂

I wouldn’t do it. You will be exposing yourself to a different way of thinking (not Catholic) that could confuse you or influence you to question what you believe about Catholicism.

I cannot say if it’s moral or not, for that you can ask a priest. 🙂

But…

If you’re allowed to go there’s the possibility they or someone might start talking to you against Catholicism.

I would say it’s no problem. I’m Orthodox and I often tune into Dr. James White. Dr. James White has no clue what he’s talking about when it comes to things Orthodox/Catholic, but I like to be up to speed on mainline Protestant thought.

It would be a bad idea.
Catholics believe the pope is the Prime Minister of Christ on earth. They don’t believe that.
Catholics believe that the blood of Christ is administered by a priest for the forgiveness of sins in the confessional. They don’t believe that.

Catholics believe that Christ is truly present body, blood, soul and divinity in the Blessed Sacrament. They don’t believe that.

Catholics believe that our Blessed Mother is someone special and unique in human history. That we can call on her for her help and intersession. That she was a virgin before birth and after, and did not have another other children with Joseph. Her spouse was the Holy Spirit. Likely a protestant apologetics class, knowing a Catholic was present, would try to challenge all these Catholic beliefs.

Would they support the baptism of babies?

When it comes to an apologetics class, I think you’d have way more to teach them then they would be able to teach you. We have the deposit of faith handed down from the Apostles through the centuries. They maintain a small sliver of a piece of that pie.

In the Old Testament when Moses came to the burning bush, that scene points forward to our time when Jesus is present in the tabernacle. We are given that scene so when Jesus is hidden in the host, we can have faith that this is really what’s going on…

I guessing you might feel like it would be fun to go out and make some Christian friends. If you decide to go to an apologetics class, it would have to be with the idea that you are a soldier going into battle. As a Catholic, you would be targeted, and they will be ready for this very thing, a Catholic innocently attends thinking it’s going to be neutral. It won’t be.

I would feel better if you were able to get Catholic apologetics, for your own interest and the building up of your faith. It may be over the internet and not a source of new friendships though. There are sound reasons for our faith, and it’s dealt with all of those Protestant questions over the last few centuries very well.

Oh, okay, that makes a lot of sense, thanks!!! I assumed it would be neutral, but they might try and impose protestant beliefs on me!!! I won’t go. 🙂

I already know everyone in the class, so I thought it would be a good way to socialize and talk, but I guess it’s not the best idea. 🙂

If you know those who are in the class and you feel strong in your faith it could be an opportunity to dispel any misconceptions they may have about the Church.

And why wouldn’t it be, if these are people you know and they havent tried to convert you already why would you think they would in the class.

I say go it might actually be fun, as well as educational.

Eveyone is making it sound like your friends are just waiting to get you on their territory to attack you with their beliefs. They’re your friends, if you trust them and you want to go go.

If you dont want to go, then dont. But please dont, not go cause your afraid you might be converted or they might make you question your beliefs. You should never be afraid where God is concerned, He will always be with you.

I go to a bible study class at a Catholic church and a Lutheran church, I learn so much. No one asks me why I still go to both. Catholic say ask us anything, Lutherins say well it’s part if God plan you are here today. No one says one is better then the other, makes me feel like I’m doing anything wrong or tries to convert me.

Me, I went alone not knowing anyone, you will atleast will be with friends.

Everyone there would be a friend of mine, so I don’t think they would try to convert me, but they could say some Protestant things that could confuse me or make me question my faith. It’s probably best that I don’t go. 🙂

I would definitely say do not go. I can’t say whether going itself would be sinful but you would be putting yourself in the near temptation of sin, which we are to avoid.

It will only cause you to question your Catholic faith and lead you to a lot of confusion. The better thing to do would be to study the Catholic faith, find a Catholic apologetics class or Catholic bible study.
