Is it okay to have the Blessed Virgin instead of a crucifix?

I recently attended a church that had a large sculpture of Mary’s Assumption behind the altar where we normally have Christ on the cross. Is this proper?
 
Assuming that a crucifix is also prominently displayed – such as a transportable crucifix brought in by altar servers and set up at the altar during Mass – it isn’t exactly “wrong,” but I would say it is imprudent. The impression can be given that the Blessed Virgin is more important than Christ, and that is an idea to which the Blessed Virgin herself would strenuously object.
