Jude and Judah, yes.

Judas, no. Just due to the immediate negativity that comes to mind

I’m sure that as adults, Judas and his brother Adolf would look back fondly on their childhoods and thank their parents for their unique names.
I don’t think it’s ever a good idea for parents to give their kids an unusual name. It doesn’t just have to be a name with a negative association. Parents would also not be doing their kids a favor if they named them Zebedee or Boaz or Huldah, for example.

There was a woman who gave birth to a son on 4 October 1957, the day that the first Russian satellite was launched. The family name was Watkins; she named him Sputnik Eisenhower.

I always wondered what happened to him.

Judas, in itself, is a beautiful name with a wonderful meaning when you sit & think about it, it’s just the world-renowned negativity that the betrayer of Christ’s name was ‘Judas’.
With that being said, it doesn’t matter what you name a child, he/she will always have a call name or false name, he/she will be teased by peers.
I do however also agree with everyone else with the fact that “Jude” would be a far better & safer (to an extent) name … you have to think about the child in the long run. Think about it, growing up, if there was a child in your class or school by the name of ‘Judas’, how would he have been treated? & children of today are FAR more cruel!

When my daughters were little, their first grade teacher told me about working in an inner city school. All of the children were black, save for one little white girl. Her name? Ebony. 😉

Strangely enough, I know two females with the name Jude. My niece has it as her middle name and one of the assistant managers at our store is named Jude.

St. Jude isn’t called Judas even though that was his name. That’s because the name Judas became forever associated with the betrayer.

So it would be bad to name a child Judas. But it would be good to name the child Jude after St. Jude.

These threads are funny.

An atheist asks a silly question and doesn’t comes back into the thread to comment. He instead sits back and watches those crazy Christians debate his silly question. I hope the OP isn’t too disappointed that this thread didn’t get too heated.

Must be a fun sport. They probably give odds in Vegas on how long the thread will go.

Is it okay for Catholics to like the South, what with slavery and all?

That was one of my favorites.

😛 Was that question about the South really a thread here? I missed that one.

I think most kids might prefer judas to Lucifer. just sayin’ 🙂

I do not thing the original questioner was sincere:shrug:.

Out of the weird name choices parents choose for their children, I still think that Judas is a better name than Marijuana Pepsi (Yes, that’s real). I guess as long as you don’t name the child Judas Iscariot, I think he’ll be fine. Just FYI, there is a St. Lucifer.

Yeah, it was a real thread.

I think the OP of this thread is a troll. He has a history of starting threads with silly or provocative topics and rarely participates beyond the opening post.
  • The Jesus image currently used by the Catholics is based of Cesare Borgia?
  • Should Christians memorize verses in the Bible?
  • Is it OK to enjoy sex?
  • Does God envy?
  • Is it okay for a Christian to be crafty and exploitative for the benefit of his faith, church and God?
  • If you’re a Christian, is it okay to be fanatical about God?
  • Does God lie?
  • Do bullies have low self esteem? Or too high self esteem?
  • Do you think the “New Age” religion has a major hand in spreading “vegetarianism”?
  • Does God have ego?
  • What if disgust for gays is natural?

I’m not a troll. I don’t know why you think my topics are silly. I’m an atheist so I don’t consider God as unquestionable that’s why some topics are provocative to Christians, I intend them to be thought provoking. I think I’m polite so far so I guess it’s okay.
