Hi there,
So I’ve been in the market for a rather decent rosary and I’ve decided I wanted something a little different from the style utilized by Catholic woodworker, rugged rosary, etc. (Even if I do love those sources!) And I was looking into getting one from the sisters of carmel
(https://www.sistersofcarmel.com/), but I’ve been told they are not in union with rome and that I shouldn’t order anything from them. However, I can’t seem to find any sources that definitively say that they are either in, or out, of union with Rome. And lastly, if they are not in union with Rome, would it be best to not order anything from them? I only ask because I would perceive the sacramental (a rosary ) to be something that is morally neutral, and not something that shares the state of someone who is either cannonically recognized or not. But, alas, as I am unsure, that is why I am here asking lol

Thank you!

About 1 or 2 years ago, a regular poster here wrote to the Sisters of Carmel asking about their status and received a reply back that they posted here confirming that the Sisters are unfortunately not in communion with the Church right now.

I personally think it would be better if you bought from an order that is in communion. Many orders sell beautiful rosaries.

I have your documentation, just compiled from various sources, including a thread elsewhere on CA.

Please do not purchase a rosary, scapular, or books on Carmelite spirituality from the so-called “Sisters of Carmel”.

In so doing, you are depriving faithful Carmelite nuns, both O.Carm. and O.C.D., from supporting themselves as they observe papal enclosure.

As for books on Carmelite spirituality, they purchase books from our Discalced Carmelite friars, ICS Publications in Washington DC, at the same discount you could receive if you bought in a reasonable quantity from ICS. Then, they mark up the price point to make a profit and lead the buyer to believe that they are purchasing the book for the same price as any other seller.

Would you like to find your nearest monastery of Discalced Carmelite nuns to inquire about obtaining scapulars, rosaries, or holy cards? Click this link

@Fauken thanks for the mention!

Here is the link to view the documentation that my fellow lay Carmelites and I have compiled. Note that it is published on a separate blog unrelated to my work for the Discalced Carmelites.

Please share this link and reach out to me via my contact information or mentioning me in any thread anywhere if you obtain further information in regard to this schismatic group.

IMO it would be imprudent to materially support an order that isn’t in full Communion. Maybe dedicate a Rosary to that being resolved. Money can’t help them but prayers can.

Peace.

Thank you so much, this was exactly the answer I was looking for!

At your service! To quote Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, “I never sought anything but the truth.”

Not sure why you couldn’t if you really liked their product. I have seen on this forum where some who identify as Catholic say it is okay to buy protestant bibles or even go so far as to say it is okay to go to protestant worship services. Why would this be different?

Here’s the problem: in his July 31, 2013 Declaration, the Bishop of Colorado Springs, Michael J. Sheridan declared that the priests who call themselves “Servants of the Holy Family” and reside at the compound on Kenosha Road are not in good standing with the Diocesan or Universal Catholic Church. Furthermore, “they may not celebrate any other public acts of worship according to canon 1331 § 1, n. 1. They may not celebrate Sacraments or Sacramentals nor receive them.”

Oops!
I am wearing a brown scapular right now I got from them. I also passed out quite a few of them at my church. I had no idea they were not in communion with Rome.
I was enrolled properly, based on instructions for the brown scapular by a Priest. The scapular was blessed.
Should I take any actions?

The scapular was blessed.
It depends on which priest blessed the brown scapular. If it was blessed by one of the priests who ministers to the “sisters” (Bishop Sheridan’s scare quotes, not mine) who operate sistersofcarmel.com the scapular has not been blessed because Bishop Sheridan declared that the priests “may not not celebrate Sacraments or Sacramentals”.

Among those links, it would be very helpful if you could please include one leading to the canon law(s) that obliges the faithful with the boycott that you are urging.
My request is “please do not”… I’m unaware of any “thou shalt not” in the Code of Canon Law. 🙂

This is not a mandate, just Carmelite common sense.
