My parish and most of my diocese recently started using projectors and large screens during mass. They got rid of the missals in the pews and now put the words to the hymns, responses, scriptures, and keynotes of the priest’s homily during mass. While I can see many benefits to this new change, especially getting the younger generation more involved, it still feels rather awkward to me. Is the use of projectors and screens during mass in this manner even allowed?

USCCB’s Media Blog:
In an effort to be flexible as well as “environmentally friendly,” some parishes make use of LCD projectors and screens to project texts and music in lieu of printed participation aids, which also creates the possibility of multimedia applications. Little guidance for the use of new technology has been given thus far, and liturgical norms do not specifically address many of the questions that have begun to emerge.
…Any digital reproduction of liturgical texts, even excerpts thereof, including projected texts, on websites or other mobile devices, is also subject to copyright guidelines.
While the use of projection screens at Mass seems to be a bit of a gray area, it would seem to be OK as long as its in accordance with all copyright laws and the permission of the local Ordinary.

Whether its advisable or wanted by a particular parish is another question…
