Is it okay to wear a rosary as a necklace?

A young man in the news wore his rosary as a necklace. The school does not allow beads to be worn in school. He would not remove his rosary he stated it was a sign of his faith. I have never known that wearing a rosary was acceptable. I know the different orders where a rosary like a cincture. Is is okay to wear a rosary as a necklace? Thank you and God bless, Joan
