Hello,

Is it okay to wear rosary beads under my school uniform? I’ve been wearing them under my shirt for a while because I don’t really have any pockets on my uniform and I’m not sure if it’s disrespectful to wear them or if it’s okay.

Thank you 🙂

Under your shirt seems that your intentions are devotional and not for fashion. I side with that being ok.

I’m having trouble with this topic as I feel the don’t wear them pull quite strongly, but every time I turn around one of my younger kids have found and are wearing rosary beads. They love Mary and explaining it isn’t jewelry doesn’t phase them.

Better to wear them respectfully than to carry them neglectfully. Just make sure you use them from time to time!

Your explanation doesn’t seem disrespectful. Be sure to use them, but however you have to keep them on your person.

Go ahead and wear them.

I would even say go ahead and wear them as Jewelry outside the shirt.

They’re Rosary beads. They aren’t magical. Don’t treat them in a superstitious way.

That’s fine if you’re wearing it for a utilitarian/ devotional purpose and not for a fashion item.

I wear mine all the time so I don’t lose it out of my pockets and so I can pray it while driving.

A lot of us, especially girls, were taught growing up that we shouldn’t wear a rosary as jewelry because it is disrespectful.
Many fashion designers in the Madonna and goth era have promoted wearing rosaries, or things that look like rosaries, as clubwear, and we’re supposed to avoid that. It’s not superstition, just respect.

If I was the headmaster of your school, I wouldn’t permit it.

It may have looked pious back in the day, but in the modern age with Madonna leading the way with wearing the rosary, it sends the wrong message.

I know my mom and the nuns taught us not to do it back in the early 70s when I was in elementary school and Madonna was probably in high school.

I always thought she wore it and said blasphemous things about it probably because she was told not to wear it in school and she was rebelling.

So we should let Madonna determine the meaning of our devotional items? It all goes back to the intention and respect of the one wearing it.

Items from popular culture get hijacked, it happens all the time, and it changes their meaning.

When I was a kid, the Rebel Flag didn’t have the dark, racist meaning it does today.

Symbol vs. Sacramental
Popstar vs. Divine Mediatrix, Mother of the Word Incarnate
Like a Virgin vs. Blessed Virgin
One of the two will rock this world in a lasting way, the other will vanish into obscurity. Let’s not let the wrong one determine our rosary usage.

You need to be very careful about this. Gangs, mostly hispanic and sometimes Irish, use rosary beads and their color or material as gang symbols.
