I am a medical student currently doing the required clinical rotation in OB/GYN. As you can imagine, one frequently runs into situations in this context that raise bioethical quandries for a Catholic believer.
I learned that one of the nurses on the service is a practicing Catholic. I asked her how she handled these situations and whether they troubled her conscience. In reply she stated that she was a “liberal Catholic” and that in fact she had demonstrated publicly as a “pro-choice Catholic” ad an abortion rights protest, but that she was nonetheless against abortion privately.
Is this possible? Can a person support a political right that runs affoul of Catholic teachings but avoid mortal sin because she does not want to exercise that right personally? Doesn’t publicly representing oneself as a “Pro-Choice Catholic” create a scandal in the Church?
