Is it possible that Hell isn't eternal?

I’ve read that some early church fathers embraced the idea of “universal reconcilliation”, i.e. that, though Hell is real, it is a place of temporary punishment/correction and that God will eventually reconcile even these to Himself. The idea being that Jesus’ atonement covers all sin for all sinners and He will be victorious over evil completely with the total eradication of all wickedness and suffering. The Christian going to Heaven immediately upon death or after Purgatory and the “lost” going to Hell for an indeterminate period of time for God’s judgement to be satisfied and the soul purified. What do you think?
