I guess there are multiple ways to attack this question.
Maybe an analogy may help to define what Im asking: When one has first met someone they are in love with, they kind of look over each others foibles and annoyances. It is not until one partner gets to know each other properly that they can truly know whether they love the other person or not.

So can one have 100% faith in their belief (religious or not, but my inspiration of this question is religion themed) when they are ignorant of historical facts about their religion or are ignorant of other religions or the teachings of other religions.

Well…🙂

Not sure of what your question indicates but maybe this response is proper. I can have absolute faith in Jesus Christ and the Church He founded on Peter - even while “knowing” that no one can walk on water, raise the dead, forgive another’s sins, etc., because my faith, a gift from God, tells me of a higher truth than the “norm.”

When I read Catharina’s post, I’ve just realised I made a mistake in the wording of the thread title :banghead:.

The OP is correct, but the title should be: Is it possible to have 100% faith while being ignorant of certain facts?

Of course. Consider most children of faith. They do not and could not have have “all the facts” but they can nonetheless have unwavering faith.

I guess what it comes down to is whether there is sometimes a difference between faith and ignorance . But you are right in saying that you can have unwavering faith without knowing everything.

Again, of course. Who has all the facts about anything?
Faith exists before and beyond any measure of facts.

Faith is, first and last, a gift from God.

For me I have 100% faith in God.
I Do Not have 100% faith in any given religion.
Or more precisely in the way a given religion is handed down and/or taught.

Actually I think that about the only way one Could have 100% faith Is to be ignorant of some of the historical facts.

The simpler your faith is, the easier it is to be fully committed to it. Jesus gave us a simple faith and one prayer. That is where I build from.

Don’t know if that is the kind of answer you are looking for but that’s my 2c:shrug:

Peace

James

Simplest of all is to recognize that no one of us has all the “facts”.

We are finite beings with finite intelligence.

For instance, I found some difficulties arising in my own faith when I realised the many different ways the scriptures can be interpreted and also when I have come across certain passages that have troubled me because I do not know what they mean. If I was ignorant of the other interpretations out there, my faith would probably be more stronger than it has been lately.

Also, I have to say that although I think I have never learnt so much about my faith, like I have on these forums and the ewtn forum and other websites, I have been exposed to a lot of opinions that are in conflict with churvh teaching which has also tested my faith.

This is not unusual at all and will continue to be a source of conflict until you find someway to measure the conflicting items against.
Here, of course, many will say that you look at the CCC, magesterium etc. In other words the oficial church teachings. This is a way to avoid error and allow you to sift through the varying opinions and attitudes.
For myself I made it simpler by looking aj Jesus statement that All of the Law and Prophets were based on the first two commandments: Love of God and Love of each other. I try to weigh the other things, and my action/attitudes against this.

It helps a lot

To JRKH.

James, I do inderstand what you’re saying but I might have a better signature prayer for you. Yours is:

Oh my God
I shall continue
to perform
all my actions
for the love of Thee
Amen.

Mine is from St. Ignatius:

“Lord, give me the strength to serve You as You deserve;
To give and not to count the cost;
to fight and not to heed the wounds;
To toil and not to seek for rest;
To labor and not to seek reward,
save that of knowing that I do Your will.”

That is beautiful -
But mine is easier for me to remember and use all during the day.:rolleyes:
I really like this though.

I also love the Anima Christi:
