Is it proper to give a priest a non-monetary gift? For instance, my priest likes a certain football team and I was thinking of giving him “sweats” for his October birthday.

Yes, so long as the gift is not too personal, too expensive, or not in keeping with the priest’s Catholic faith and status as a priest.

This would be an example of a gift that is too personal. Gifts of clothing to anyone, except for a baby at a baby shower, is too personal for anyone who is not a family member. If you want to acknowledge this priest’s interest in his favorite football team, give him a gift card for the team’s shop. If it is a college team, the college will likely have a shop on campus (and perhaps also online). If it is an NFL team, you can find team gear at NFLShop.com, which also offers gift cards.
