Is it proper to remove the Holy Water during Lent?

Our pastor has removed the holy water font at the entrance of our church. He will put it back on Easter Sunday. Isn’t holy water a sacramental that should be used when entering and exiting a church? Last year he filled the font with sand to represent the desert. Is this something new being used in the practice of our faith? I’m 65 years old and this is the first time I have seen anything like this. I believe that people will began to forget about the font after Easter Sunday because they will get use to it not being there. Please help in this matter. Thank you, Eleanor Fuse
