Is it proper to stand during Communion?

I’ve changed churches and just before communion begins everyone in the congregation stands, a bell is even rung by the alter server to initiate this. This is disruptive to me and to my family and seems irreverant - is standing proper? Or should we remain kneeling until our turn to get up and go to the communion line, then resume kneeling? Thank you.
