Is it the flag for Vatican or for Holy See?

Dear Catholic Thinkers,

I am pretty aware of the two separate sovereignty of **HOLY SEE **and VATICAN CITY STATE.

I am also aware of the flag hoisted at several Holy See nunciatures around the world. I am aware that the Nunciature represent the **HOLY SEE **and not as ambassadors for the VATICAN CITY STATE.

My question is about the flag.

What does the existing flag stand for? Does it stand for HOLY SEE? Or Does it stand for VATICAN CITY STATE?

Hopefully, someone my come up to clear my misunderstand!
 
According to this the flag is for the State of Vatican City. Is a bit confusing then that nunciature fly the Vatican City flag when they are representatives of the Holy See. As far as I can tell the Holy See does not have its own flag.
 
The symbol on the flag and for the Holy See are the same, so maybe the flag is both?

A nunciature is actually an embassy, so of course the Vatican flag is displayed. In diplomatic terms, the “State of Vatican City” and the “Holy See” are synonymous. I recall seeing the the placard in from of the French Embassy to the Vatican and IIRC it reads “Ambassade de France aupres la Sainte Siège.”

Maybe there is a bit of confusion here. The Vatican City State is a “Country” a sovereign area of government with stated boundaries “frontiers”

The Holy see is the ruler of this country.
The Nuncio “I will post wikipedia definition here”
Nuncio is an ecclesiastical diplomatic title, derived from the ancient Latin word, nuntius, meaning “envoy.”

is an ambassador of the Holy see and by extension from the country.
Therefore at the Nunciatura what flag would you show?
Logically the flag of the Vatican City State.
By the way, the flag of the Vatican City State was chosen and defined by… The Holy see.
Since it is the Holy see that governs it.

I agree. This flag flies at EWTN. I see both the Vatican flag and the American flag inside of my parish (similar to the protestant parishes flying the “Christian” flag and American flag). I assume this is used as a sign of the Catholic Church and the Pope. Why would parishes fly it if it is solely a secular flag? 🙂
 
Much like the Royal Standard, a flag flown over the palace which the King or Queen of England is physically in residence in, the standard of the Holy See and His territory, (Vatican City) are the same. Protocol differs in that the Royal Standard which is different than the Union Jack, is only flown over the actual place the Sovergn resides in, and the Standard of the Holy See may be flown even if the Pope is not residing in the place where it is flown or displayed.

Can’t site a source (yet) I did read it some time back. I’ll see if I can find the source.
