…that a church LOOK like a church? Not something ridiculously modern, not something non-denominational in appearance, not built to resemble a boat. Seriously, I’m looking for a parish in Madison, WI and there is a church nearby that looks like flippin’ boat.

Good Grief! I’m trying to be open minded about finding a new parish but I’d be lying if I said that the outward appearance of the church didn’t matter to me.

Give me an old school, old fashioned church any day!

A quick google search indicates 134 parishes in the Madison diocese and 13 in the Madison area- I’m positive one will meet your needs. You don’t have to go to the closest one either.

How does the boat look on the inside? Maybe its very traditional on the inside. Good luck on your search. Some of them look very traditional.

I don’t know what St. Andrew’s (The Boat) looks like on the inside - it was locked when I went to go be nosy They appear to have 8 AM weekday masses, so maybe I’ll go to the Friday one and check it out.

There are a bazillion churches in the area - it’s kind of overwhelming for me (both as a newbie Catholic and as a newbie Madison resident) LoL

Try Holy Redeemer Church. It is a beautiful old church with really good priests. It’s located on West Johnson, a half block off State. Masses are Sat. 6:30 pm Spanish and Sunday 9:00 am English, 11:30 am Spanish, 5:00 pm English. Confessions are scheduled 7 days a week.

Our church was built in 1985 and all we have are plain gray stone walls to look at inside. I guess the idea is, when they design these “modern” churches, if the interior is plain, people will focus on the Mass instead of being distracted by the decor. The problem is, the ugliness of the interior becomes a distraction in itself. The interior should surround the Mass with a sense of beauty. Plain brick walls are just oppressive to the human spirit.

Eek…I hate to say this, but that sounds like it could be pretty dismal. Being born and raised in New England, one gets pretty used to a certain architectural style.

The architecture is important, but I think the preist is more important. A beautiful building won’t make up for mumbled masses and ho-hum homilies.

In the so-called “modern” church buildings, it can become a distraction just looking around trying to find any evidence of a Crucifix, a kneeler, or a Station of the Cross.

I like my Gothic-style church. (and we don’t have “mumbled Masses” or “ho-hum homilies”, either )
