I’ve asked a priest about this and he said that it was fine and that something good may come going to a different country. But in my theology class, I am taught that I owe my country love and patriotism. So is it wrong that I like another country more than my own?
Thanks!

I will reply to you with the words of a saint

Love your own country: it is a Christian virtue to be patriotic. But if patriotism becomes nationalism, which leads you to look at other people, at other countries, with indifference, with scorn, without Christian charity and justice, then it is a sin.

In America, we all, with the exception of Native Americans, came from another country, so it is a tough question. We are proud of our heritage, but we really should be loyal to the US of A.

I don’t want to say it’s wrong, but I don’t understand it. I have this idea that if you dislike your country and like another one better, you would probably move. If I don’t like living in Alabama and prefer Florida, I wouldn’t spend my time disliking Alabama-I’d just move.

You can love something or someone without liking it/them.

I’d like to know OP’s motivation, and just where he is and who he admires.

I don’t think it’s wrong per se, just misguided.

If he lives in, say Paraguay and admires the US, fine: many millions around the world have fled poverty and oppression to come to the USA.

If he lives in the US and admires Paraguay, I’d say “what’s up with that?”, particularly if he’s never visited there.

I remember well a thread on this site a few years back: some kid in the USA kept gushing about how he so loved Sweden, despite never having visited there. Why? Basically because he heard that all factory workers there all took a break at like 11am to eat sweet rolls and he just thought that was so beyond perfect, i kid you not.

OP, if you are American but cannot see the greatness of the USA, you need to study US history more fully. There are reasons people are giving up their entire ways of life to try and come the the USA

Not particularly.
I’m not quite sure why we owe allegiance to a country simply by the fact of our birth there. It’s not something we have control over, and if for some reason we are more enthralled by another country, that’s fine. I’m not really sure why this crosses into any sort of moral imperative.

Let’s say a kid was born into a family that owned a Mexican restaurant that had been in the family for generations. That kid still could grow up liking Italian food more and that would be perfectly fine.
We all have our preferences, some more eccentric than others. (I note with interest that you are a monarchist like me, although I prefer the German Empire.)

I do live in the U.S. My family came here during ww1 (a lot went back to fight for the emperor lol). And the country I hope to go too is Russia (I’m not crazy) as I’m Russo-Germanic. Almost everything about Russia I find appealing, the culture, the history, the people and politics. I know that it’s behind the U.S in development and that I would be giving up certain privileges, but I just want to go back to where my family came from. Also don’t worry, I’m definitely visiting before I actually decide to live there lol.

He is pushing Russia back towards a monarchy. Also he has implemented many Christian laws. However I am fully aware of his flaws.

Well, I was raised that I’m a Catholic first. So, I don’t know why nationalism or patriotism would be a part of my Catholic Faith. It’s just not the Catholicism I was raised with, it seems other Catholics were.

I love where I live in California and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else in America or beyond. But I don’t think in anywhere as a Catholic I am asked to have blind Faith in political figures or the country. I’m neither ashamed nor proud to be an American, that dichotomy doesn’t exist for me. I’m only proud of my personal accomplishments and there only humbly so as I recognize I had the right parents and environment.

So, if you have a fondness for Russia, there is nothing wrong with that. If it is the current political climate in America you don’t like, well that is temporary. Focus your energies on your state and local communities and away from all the media. It’s really not so bad out there, although I don’t like the current president there is really nothing he can do to ruin my life or enhance my life.

Sometimes because of work considerations we have to live in one part of the country though we would prefer to live somewhere else.
Metro areas are where the best jobs are, but dealing with traffic, etc, makes for a lot of headaches.

Oh I understand totally, and for the record Joe I agree with a lot of what you post.

I do find it a little silly that, in America, even those who claim to really hate this country seldom leave it, and yes, I know the OP didn’t say that.

Again though, I love your posts.

As long as it doesn’t devolve into oikophobia you should be fine.

LOL. Your friend would be in for a shock. My brother worked there for a while. He was very much discriminated against because he wasn’t Swedish and didn’t speak German… The EU is generally the same throughout nowadays…they all get 6 weeks vacation starting…like the 2 weeks in the US…and they all have healthcare and many other social programs that are not available in the US…but the US has something special that is hard to put your finger on. I"m originally from Ireland but I love the US and currently live here.

Ya, you want to visit there. Many people in Russia want to live in the US. If you visit, don’t just go to the tourist areas…do your research. Talk to your russian friends… Go visit and talk with russians while there. I suspect you will prefer to live here after you’ve talked with them…but maybe not…LOL

I was born and live in the USA. So what? It’s ok and I have lots of opportunity here. Are there other places I’d rather live? Probably, but the desire to do so isn’t strong enough to spend the time or money to do it. This is where God put me and my time here is nothing compared to eternity.

One God. One holy, catholic church. One huge, beautiful world. Go where God leads you with joy in your heart! 😎

He is pushing Russia back towards a monarchy. Also he has implemented many Christian laws. However I am fully aware of his flaws.
To address both points. Putin has no intention of re-instating Russian royals bloodline. But he certainly desires a tsarist like autocracy where elites claim a ‘divine right’ to rule.

He courted Christians just like Trump did but that base is seeing through him and last year were part of the Russia wide pro-democracy rallies. Many being arrested for standing up against election corruption and the unfair justice system.

His political ideology has so many points of contradiction to the values of the US Constitution.
