I often have people tell me (or imply) that it is immoral to dislike someone. I disagree. What I mean to say is that you should always do the most loving thing, even for your enemies. However you don’t have to like them do you? There are people I don’t like, but I will not gossip about them and will refuse to listen to any gossip about them. However I still don’t like them. I don’t want to spend time with them (unless its uncharitable to do so), and I’m sure some people feel that way about me, which is fine.

Opinions?

I sure hope it’s not immoral to dislike someone. I don’t like most people.

No, I don’t think it’s a sin to dislike someone. There will always be difficult people, or perfectly nice people whose personalities just clash with ours. We should treat them charitably when we meet them, but we don’t have to purposefully seek them out.

In fact, I’d say doing so (if it tempted one to behave badly or think ill of the other person unjustly) might be placing oneself in a near occasion of sin, which would be unwise.

No its not wrong to dislike someone, but you should still love them as you seem to understand.

I do not recall a requirement for you to like everyone. I do know there is that thing about forgiving and loving all.

But, of course you must seperate the actions from the person who you may not know well enough to judge. This is why Jesus does that job for you. You don’t have the burden of having to make the call. He only asks that you forgive and love.

I have to say, it is something that one must take day by day I guess. We are only human, and I have hit my limit with a circumstance that is very intolerable. Day by day I get up and try to do it again. It is not an easy thing he asks.

There a difference between dislike and hate. It depend what is the cause of the “dislike” sometimes is a negative feeling you experience, and sometimes it is a choice.

You are going to find people out there that are not pleasant to be with - your human and nothing in life is perfect. If a person is mean, obnoxious or does something to upset you, it not a sin that you have negative feelings, but sometimes it is hard to seperate in your heart who the person is and what they are doing that is wrong. I don’t think when something is going wrong you say to yourself “Wait let me take inventory of my feelings, is it her I don’t like or what she’s doing wrong to me I don’t like?” Sometime that line between who a person is and their actions gets blurred. If you understand when you say don’t like them it most likely you don’t like being in their presence, it’s because your afraid the of the situation they put you in. But don’t feel like you sin if the person gets you upset. It seems by your post that you do everything possible, not only behave yourself but follow the Commandments (that others overlook). It’s one thing to act with manners, it another to put on Christ. If they find their strength in being rude or vindictive, you have to find your inner strength by relying on the Lord. If you do the best to do what’s right, and forgive and forget and you shouldn’t be worried.

The commandment is to love your neighbor; it doesn’t say anything about liking him.

A paramedic once explained to us that in his job you soon encounter a drunk who has drowned in his own vomit. No way are you going to like him. However, do you love him enough to give him mouth to mouth resuscitation and save his life?

Yes.

Erm . . . well, you would probably suction first, and then bag him, assuming you were properly equipped. 😃 (I’m an EMT.) Need an open airway before you start with the breathing.

It’s a good analogy, though.

Flame4, you’re absolutely right. It’s simply not possible to like everyone one meets, although, for one’s sense of self worth, it’s always a good idea to be as charitable as you can about people and at least try to find something good about a person, even if you’d rather not associate personally with them.

There are people in the world whom I detest, but if they were in dire need I wouldn’t pass them by. That’s the loving thing to do.

Remember too that avoiding someone could well also be the loving thing to do: if you simply can’t get along, you shouldn’t try forcing the matter and end up with both of you being made miserable.

IMHO anyone who says they like (or not dislike, to use the double negative) everyone they’ve ever met is either not being honest or has a screw loose. Human nature is human nature, and there are good reasons for not liking someone who, for example, is obnoxious, rude, etc. or just plain rubs us the wrong way.

Love them, yes. Like them, not necessary.

Well, aren’t you a ray of sunshine! 😃

But seriously, related to the OP’s question, there’s a fine line perhaps between not liking someone and disliking them, isn’t there? Not liking, IMHO is kinda like being neutral towards someone; you don’t like them but you don’t dislike them either. Disliking someone, to me, is more of an “active” thing (not that you do or say anything in an active manner). Dfficult to put into words, methinks.

I hear you, I don’t like most people either :p.

We can’t control feelings (anger, hurt, pain.) But loving and hating is not a feeling, its a choice. We only sin when we can make choices.
Thanks for the (name removed by moderator)ut guys 🙂

No it is not. Beware the wolves in sheeps clothing. The devil can work his way into those individuals seeming to be doing good things~ they may become entranced with evil/ or persons who draw them toward sin. I think we all know of someone who is like this. Example - gossip in the work place can cause harm/lies and is a sin to God.
I deal with this one quite a bit. Be mindful little eyes what you see, be mindful little ears what you hear and be quite mindful little mouth what you say.

If I know of someone who has hurt, lied, stolen etc… I don’t hate them (Just as God doesn’t) but I certainly don’t like what they do! I don’t have to like them either. There are persons who do the devil’s work and spread poison. I choose to recognize this and not drink from his cup of friendship and keep a distance. That is not a sin. I trust my gut instinct.

What makes Lent hard is realizing these individuals are all around us and the risk of temptation is ever so close. I remember Jesus and Mary and keep something of my faith upon my person whenever possible-

I’m glad you asked this. Because one of my neighbours is rude to me frequently and I was confused about this too.

I don’t like people who are mean to my kids.
I don’t like people who are mean to their kids.
I don’t like people who don’t expect much from their kids.
I don’t like people who are uppity or who steal or who cheat.
I don’t like people who peddle drugs to kids and get them hooked.
I don’t like people who drive 10 miles below the speed limit in front of me.
I don’t like people who think by going to church every Sunday gives them the freedom to do as they please and hurt people by their words and actions during the week.

I dont like people who shoot at me
I dont like people who set up bombs on roadsides
I dont like people who use women and children as human shields.
I dont like government officials who opress thier citizens
I dont like communist
I dont like…Goodness, I hope its not a sin to dislike people.
