I recently discovered two games that fascinated me in their blend of science fiction and fantasy: one, Shadowrun Returns, is a grim cyberpunk dystopia where humans live alongside elves, trolls, orks and dwarves, and guns and cybernetics live alongside magic and amulets. The second one, Skyforge, is a tale of immortals defending their homeworld.
BUT…As the self explanatory title goes, I am having doubts about the morality if this games.
In Shadowrun, while magic is mostly fictional and “innocuous” (it derives from Native American shamanism and eastern “Qi” mysticism with a bit of celtic runes and mandalas thrown in), it also heavilt features “spirit summoning”. Granted, since it is based on Native American folklore spirits are not ghosts but “totems” and mystical animals, and all the “conjuring” is comparable to alchemy…but still…I don’t really know…
The second one, Skyforge, is the most “problematic”: the whole point of the game is to make your charachter evolve from a “regular” immortal to a full fledged god (a killable one, sure, but still a reality-warping god)…which is more or less the philosophy that occultish nuts like LaVey or Crowley kept preaching. I mean, the whole presence of “other gods” does not bother me too much because, despite their immense powers, they’re more like overpowered dude a la Marvel’s Mighty Thor or Warhammer Chaos Gods or Lovecraft Elder Gods than our concept of The All-Encompassing, All-Seeing, All-Loving Father…but (again)…but still…
I dunno. Advice? Even better if you know/have played these games? (If you have not…well, your opinion, as long as it is consistent, is of course welcome
