I can speak as someone who is on the other side, as to why an affair? The question is really, why do we have the attitude toward marriage that we do?
It’s really our attitude toward sex, since we’re taught, nowadays, that sex is such an essential part of marriage, rather than what our pastors teach us about marriage in pre=Cana.
The answer is that society has taught us to disrespect human sexuality. Sexuality between a husband and wife is sacred. But all around us, and for the last 40 years or so, sexuality is shown to be what it’s not meant to be-recreational, pleasure-seeking, focusing on your orgasm, selfish. It starts with magazines (and I’m not just talking about nude magazines), even on the shelf at the check-out stand-there’s stuff on the covers of these that weren’t there on the inside 40 years ago! Billboards, in our music, in movies, in advertising, on television. Normal, chaste marriage is not even on display because much of our society would not watch if it were. Sex, sex, sex all over. This is the start of our slide down the slippery slope. Of course, if one casts his eyes upon what’s important-nothing in this life, really-we will see what we’re truly called upon to live.
I am not saying that I’m not responsible for what I did to my marriage, I’m saying that the attitudes that pervade our society influenced my desire for it.
By the way, we’re working it out. I’m clean, no attachments to anything but my work, my home, my parish (wrong order!), and I keep my eyes on my faith. A few counseling sessions with our pastor. We’re struggling, but we’re dealing with each other. We’re communicating very well, most of the time. Our parish is our life.
