Earlier this year I asked a girl out on a date because I was crazy about her, but before we even went on that one date, it got awkward, so I asked her if she still wanted to go out and she said she just wanted to be friends in probably the nicest way possible. I think at the time she was actually interested in someone else so my timing was really off and more of a result of trying to beat someone at something that should really have come more natural. I’ve respected her desire to just be friends and she’s moved on to find a boyfriend, whose also a good friend of mine as well. All 3 of us are Catholic, so our standards on what dating means in regards to marriage and chastity are on the same level or so I would presume, the point being I really cant say anything negative about this guy at all. That being said though, it has been kind of tough seeing them together as I do like her. More recently I’ve noticed though that we’ve been hanging out a fair amount and there is some chemistry that I think would work pretty well for a relationship if her boyfriend was not a factor. I’ve never wanted to steal another person’s girl or convince her that I was better option, but there does seem to be potential, especially since he’s planning on transferring to different school. Would it be wrong for me to try to become really close friends with her with the intention of eventually dating, or perhaps even “stealing” her from him? It sounds despicable, but I imagine if it truly works for the best, and if I act prudently and respectfully it might not be bad to think about her like that. Am I on the right track here? Is there something sacred about dating that missing? Any honest answer would be greatly appreciated. God bless

Friend,

How would you like it if one of your friends did this to you? You yourself say that it sounds despicable. Well, it IS despicable. Do you really think that the Lord wants you to attract her away from another guy–especially one you consider a friend? Let go of it. Be a man and leave it in the Lord’s hands.
