Is "Jesus Malverde" a Saint?

Is “Jesus Malverde” a Saint?

I was watching a television show called “Homeland Security USA” and they were showing the US-Mexican border. One of the border guards was talking about what people wear around their necks when trying to sneak into the United States.

He showed what appeared to be a scapular and said that it was of “Jesus Malverde”. He said that people believe he protects those who smuggle drugs, firearms, and currency. Then the border guard opened his own wallet to show holy cards of Our Lady of Guadelupe and 2 other Catholic saints.

I have heard that people who try to sneak into the US think he is their saint to protect them.

Is it a sin to wear this type of scapular? Is it a sin to believe that “Jesus Malverde” is a saint? Would that be a violation of the Commandment regarding false gods?
 
Jesus Malverde is not recognized as a Saint by the Catholic Church. Whether he ever actually existed can not be verified so it is possible he may just be a local folk legend like Paul Bunyan or John Henry.
 
Could there ever be a patron saint of drug smugglers? There are patron saints of prostitutes, theives and alcoholics, but they are prayed to for repentance and conversion, not for success in those activities. Surely praying for success in sin would be blasphemy or superstition, not piety?
 
The patron saint of unrepentant drug smugglers is Lucifer. :eek:

Other than that, they should have a patron saint for conversion, and the rest of us should pray to them for the smugglers.

Who would be a good patron saint for conversion of drug smugglers?
