Is losing sperm a mortal sin?

When your body needs to rid itself of an excessive amount of sperm, it will. That’s why men sometimes have “wet dreams”, their body has built up its sperm count, and needs to mae room for new sperm.

I’m pretty sure that is incorrect. The body does not have excess sperm as sperm disintegrates after a while to make way for the new sperm being created. Wet dreams are not just are not for that purpose but are based in sexual desire (in my opinion).

I doubt that the portion I’ve put in bold is true. I have not had sex or masturbated in years. My body isn’t inclined to get rid of any sperm. At least none that I’ve been aware of.
The last wet dream occurred decades ago.

One can’t generalise like that. Individuals are different; some have a strong sexual urge while in others it is weak or very weak. Repression, where the sex urge is strong, can lead to eroticism; restraint can lead to passion. I want to say that it is more difficult for some people to control themselves. We stumble, ask God to forgive us, confess our sins and we are forgiven. God knows all our weaknesses.
“If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just, and will forgive our sin and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. if we say we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us”. (1 John 1:8-10)
The secular theology of “relativism” ( It is only wrong, if I think it’s wrong) is causing great harm and so is the Mass Media ( If it feels good, do it! ) The Church teaches absolute values and we catholics have to accept them. Catechesis should not vary from one region to another. The church teaching is universal. We can’t just pick what we like and discard what we don’t like.

I can speak for everyone being different, in fact for every individual male experiencing differences in his life. I don’t generally post personal stuff here but an undiagnosed medical condition, about 5 years ago, had suppressed my testosterone production and libido, and my testosterone level was at the low end of normal.

After diagnosis and successful treatment, the problem corrected itself and a subsequent test showed the level was actually slightly above the high end of normal. I would add, I am 51 years old. It has me bouncing off the walls. Fortunately I am married and we are both healthy… I can’t imagine though, what it would be like for someone like me being unmarried.

Needless to say I still struggle with this issue. Some will have to struggle harder, and be more reliant on Christ’s mercy. Others won’t find this a struggle, and they should be thankful to God for it and work on their other sins instead. But it isn’t right to say to others “I didn’t have trouble with this so you shouldn’t either”.

I speak from personal experience when I say that when your testosterone level is low, it’s comparatively easy to give up this habit, but when it’s at the high end, it’s darn near impossible.

Semen has two components, sperm cells which die off after a certain period of time, and seminal fluid which is secreted by the prostate and is the medium/nutrient that supports sperm cells. The major part of the volume of ejaculate is in fact seminal fluid, not sperm cells.

The prostate is a gland that secretes accumulates that fluid. The only way for it to be expelled in any great quantity is ejaculation. Otherwise it just decomposes, which is speculated to be a factor in prostate cancer (to be clear: speculated, not proved).

When trying to conceive it is well known that frequent ejaculation contributes to healthier sperm. Of course if you’re trying to conceive, the best way to do that is to have frequent intercourse with your spouse!
