First, because we are more than a collection of empty space and charged particles. We have intellect and reason. We contemplate the unknown. Those of us with faith accept that there is more out there than more empty space and charged particles. We hold that there is God (in Christian thought). In order to know God, we use the tools that he gave to us, one of which IS religion.

Second, we are by our nature selfish. Religion should force us out of our comfort zone to help others.

Finally, we tend not to love but to lust and use. It is through the Christain faith that we can see the higher importance of other people and not treat them like sex objects.
does one need religion to be moral?
we have Disney now. hehe… at least
america does anyway.

wow, you just basically said that only
christians can see their loved ones
in a higher importance. we all know
that’s not true.

Yes, you do. Atheists have been telling me for years not to call them moral but to call the good ones ethical.

I never said that ONLY Christians do not see each other as sex objects. I said that through Christianity we do not. You added what you want to see.

i think man’s folly is that he sees himself as alone.
i think that’s selfish and at the same time arrogant.
i think we need to go back to our roots and see
that we are not alone. we have each other and other
animals as our brothers and sisters and it is up to
us as the more advanced species to take care of earth.

i think we’ve wasted a lot of time looking towards the
heavens and not enough at each other and the earth.

And what Christianity teaches ignores other people? Boy, you have a lot of learning left to do.

i do have a lot to learn.
but what i have learned is that christianity
does not INCLUDE other people, such
as budhists, muslims, animists, etc. etc.

The FAITH does not include them, but we are called as Christians to help everyone in need, no matter their faith. We are taught to love everyone dispite their creed. That is Christianity. Everyone is our neighbor and we are called to love our neighbor as ourselves/

By the way, I have a lot to learn too.

jimmy, i beg to differ. religion and love are not the same.

but have you wondered if maybe
adam ate the fruit out of love for eve?
Love does not exist without God. Without God love is simply a man made concept and consequently can be unmade just as easily as it was made. There is no such thing as a transendental. You have specifically argued that there is no good or evil or true or false. If there is no truth then there is no love.

so then are only christians privy to love?
All people are capable of love because all people have been created for the sake of love of God. But if you deny the existence of God you also deny the existence of love. Love is then reduced to an evolutionary tool which increases evolutionary fitness between individuals.

if one can love on their own, why need religion or christianity
(the one religion that is love)?
Love is oriented toward God. We are created that we might love God and the rest of mankind. The only reason why you can love is because of this orientation due to the way God created you. That said, if you ignore it you will never truely understand love. You might have a basic idea of what the eros aspect of love is but you will never learn what true love is.

They are all called to be Christians just like the Christians are called to be Christians. Everyone is treated with the same expectation because we are all held to the same truth which is God. We are not relativists who would say that there is no truth or that all religions are true. We hold that Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. He is the one gateway to God and to knowledge of truth. When the budhist or the muslim is converted to the truth he will grow in it.

Truth (read religion) is how you distinguish between love and lust.
