Now to preface this, i have been scrolling through the other MTG posts on Catholic answers but i’m still confused on several things, if someone could help that would be much appreciated.
  1. Most people assume there is no back story, but there is a lot of lore, some of it seems to glorify satanic or occultist things
2.Lots of the art doesn’t make demons seem weak, but some seem fairly powerful

3.Some of the cards seem to glorify occult practices (Resurrections, things similar to fortune telling and witchcraft, and there is a card that is straight up called “Divination”)

4.its possible the creators could use the real name of a demon on one of their cards, and that could lead to some demonic stuff
  1. Also if anyone had anything that could also be helpful
Thanks in advance for helping out!

Like many fantasy based games, it would most likely depend on the person. I’d you have a good grounding and understand that it is fantasy it should be fine in my opinion. Others may disagree with me.

Magic the Gathering is very bad for your wallet though.

Agree, if you have trouble separating reality from a game, don’t play that game.

Well my concern there is that it will desensitize me too these things

I think this is a case of how you take things.

I’ve been playing Skyrim for almost 8 years now, and in all of these years I ressurected dead enemies, attacked cities, killed an Emperor, became a vampire and a werewolf, defeated witches, fought against an order of assassin’s, joined a bard’s and a mage’s college, and the list goes on and on…
Has this affected me?
No

I played a lot of MTG back in the day. I have started to see more recently that there is a whole story to it all. I have never paid any attention to it as it really doesn’t change the mechanics of the game beyond what I can read on the cards themselves.

It’s fantasy, not occult. If a person has trouble distinguishing between the two, they should avoid the game. But there is no official yay or nay that is binding on all Catholics.

Writing something into lore doesn’t mean you’re glorifying it. It means it makes for an interesting world/character/story. MtG is basically just a mishmash of fantasy ideas, some of which are heavily inspired by dark fantasy. I wouldn’t read into it any more than a fascination with the genre.

And demons are incredibly powerful. Sure, they aren’t when compared next to God (who is, though?), but that doesn’t make them weak.

Besides “demon” is a very loose term when taking the whole of religions, mythologies, fantasies, etc. into account. It can range from the fallen angels who constantly desire evil, as in Christianity, to spirits more akin to fae that may be helpful, mischievous, evil, etc.

It’s a mechanic of the game passed through the MtG lore. Don’t read too much into it. You aren’t literally engaging in the occult.
