PLEASE HELP ME ANSWER THIS
Is Mary the mother of Jesus’ Human nature or the Mother of God? If Jesus’ human nature died on the cross but his divine nature did not, then how was he born both human and divine. If God is eternal then how can Mary be the Mother of God?

Edit: Thank you to everyone for replying I think I get it now. I’m not trying to start a feud. I was just confused as a former evangelical Protestant. Iam trying to learn & understand the faith better.

We affirm Mary as the Mother of God. While Jesus is the pre-existent and divine second person of the Trinity, he obtains his human nature through Mary during the incarnation. That being said, at the incarnation, Jesus’ divine nature is united with his human nature and these two are inseparable. In that sense Mary is the Mother of God because at the incarnation, she was pregnant with Christ who is fully God and fully man.

If you were in Nazareth 2,000 years ago and asked the toddler Jesus who his mommy was, who do you think he would have pointed to?

Jesus is God.
Mary is his mother.
Therefore, Mary is the mother of God.

Natures don’t have mothers. Persons have mothers. Shall I say that my mother is not the mother of me but only of my human nature? No. I am a person composed of body and soul. My mother did not create my soul, yet she is my mother.

But before Mary was born who was the mother of God?

The title Mother of God is not concerned with Christ’s pre-existent nature other than to say that Christ was the pre-existent second person of the Trinity. It is a confession that at his conception, from the moment of his incarnation, Christ was fully God and fully man.

But God is not a person.
The Father and the Holy Spirit are not persons? You need to brush up on your Trinity 101.

What I mean by this is that you are correct in saying that God is not human, you are not correct in saying the persons of the Trinity are not personal. You see the difference?

Yes God is Three Persons–Father, Son, Holy Spirit, each wholly possessing the one divine nature.
The Son is a divine Person, who took a human nature through the incarnation. He has a mother. He chose his mother.

I don’t think anyone thought you had bad intentions, and as a convert myself I totally understand. After I became intellectually convinced that I could rely on the teachings of the Church, when I first began asking the Blessed Mother for her aid my Protestant conditioning was still so strong that it made me physically ill.

I’m glad to hear that I am among good company. I did the exact same thing.

I can understand Protestants feeling squicky about praying the Rosary, but why would you think God would strike you personally dead when he seems fine with literally thousands of Catholics praying the Rosary every day, sometimes at ginormous group gatherings?
