Is masturbation still considered a mortal sin if you maintain your relationship with God? I masturbate however I struggle to stop yet I continue to pray, confess, and receive sacraments. A mortal sin is a sin that completely destroys your relationship with God, if I still do it but I also continue having a good relationship with God is it really that bad?

Do you know masturbation is a sin?

Do you do it on purpose?

Does someone force you to do it?

If the answers are YES, YES, NO, then you have severed your relationship with God. If your answers are NO to the either of the first two and/or YES to the last one, then, you have only damaged your relationship with God.

In either case, repentance is necessary.

Get a Catechism of the Catholic Church. Look up the word masturbation and read what it says. I believe it is section 2352. It can be a mortal sin, or given certain circumstances, it can be a lesser offense that does not permanently destroy your relationship with your Creator.
Objectively, you have to answer the question for yourself.

Yes, it is really that bad. You continue in relationship with God through confession, reconciliation, communion and penance. Keep up the good fight, and don’t get duped into thinking “it isn’t really that bad”. None of us want to come to the end of this life separated from Christ.
