hello, I was wondering if masturbation is a sin? I used to masturbate occasionally (I’m 16) but have stopped since I feel so guilty and want to keep myself pure. I’m not sure if having masturbated before makes me a tainted person but I really hope not.

As far as I know it is a sin, however i’m not an expert, and I’m not sure if it’s always a grave sin. Ask a priest.

Please, talk to a priest about this, maybe during your confession.

Catchism of the Catholic Church
2352 By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action."138 “The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose.” For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved."139

To form an equitable judgment about the subjects’ moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability.

Masturbation is always gravely sinful but this persons culpability may or may not be that of a mortal sin. OP, go to confession as soon as possible and confess this sin. You are on the right path since you have made resolutions to not commit this sin again.

lixannie, I am new here so I don’t know what is appropriate to discuss here or not but I will give you my thoughts and if they are inappropriate, I am sure they will be removed. You are most certainly not “tainted”, not any more than any other human. We all do things that are not the way that God wants us to do them. When we realize that, we go to Confession and express our sorrow and try to not do those acts again.

As far as your specific question, our sexuality is a precious gift that God has given us to be used to cooperate with Him in the act of creating new life and in forming a permanent bond of love with another person. If what we are doing with our sexuality does not foster those two things, then we have missed the mark, we have sinned, and are not acting as God has designed us to act.

I guess from the response from the forum. It seems that it might be grave, but still common problem. We are humans, born of dust and of Spirit. A part of us is still into this world, and it is very uncommon to see anyone completely pure, we are unworthy vessel to start with

Pure itself is a very high standard in our modern day environment. Please seek confession. There are bigger challenges in life than this. E.g. breaking the Ten Commandments.

Repentance to GOD, means still turning to GOD after you committed sin and not run away from the problem. Keep up the attitude u should be fine.
