Is masturbation always a sin?

I am a Catholic teenager. Due to my Faith, I make an effort not to masturbate. When I haven’t done so for a period of time, usually by ten days, I tend to have a nocturnal emission.

Which would be fine, because to my understanding that is not a sin, except that I usually spend three nights a week at a friends house, which makes it very awkward. Their house has very little privacy, and to make matters worse, his nine year old sister often bursts into the room where I sleep early in the morning. Just an overall awkward situation.

So I think I know what the answer to this will be, but I want to get people’s opinions anyway. If done not for sexual pleasure, with no thought involved, just for the purpose of relieving myself and avoiding an embarrassing situation for all, is it still a sin if done once every ten days or so? My guess is yes?

Thank you.

Yes. There are no exceptions. If you choose to do so with full consent of the will and full knowledge, you commit mortal sin. Period.

Op, here’s my suggestions: Don’t worry about being “caught.” Wet dreams are totally natural and healthy. Besides, nobody should be looking at your underwear when you wake up. Pack extra clothes when you go to other people’s houses for the night. If you experience one overnight, just go clean yourself up in the bathroom and change your clothing. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, it just takes a little planning. Stay strong.

Masturbation only seems like an impossible thing for people to overcome because it has become a habit for so many, even an addiction. These things are not easy to break by any means but absolutely possible.

It is a sin because it is a selfish act abusing God’s sexual gift He has given us. Folks who masturbate are never happy, they are miserable on the inside.

Strive to remain pure and chaste and each day thank God for the cross you carry. When you get urges to masturbate, offer it up to God and thank Him for this cross and suffering that you accept fully. We do not always understand the crosses we must carry but God has given us these crosses to carry because they are absolutely necessary for us to live close to Him.

Masturbation is always gravely sinful. Make sure to have a full and rewarding life. This doesn’t mean being busy all of the time. It means being busy with work and also having satisfying hobbies and rest. Ask God for this virtue and he’ll give it to you.

Peace.

What would it mean to do something without full consent of the will?
True psychological addiction or external coercion mean you aren’t exactly choosing something freely.

Interesting. I read a medical report that indicated that masturbation or sexual intercourse on a weekly basis reduced the chance of getting prostate cancer. If you are not married, spouse passed away, or spouse no longer wants sexual intercourse, it seems like a medically necessary action to reduce chance of getting cancer.

People often try to justify sinful actions in that way. Masturbation is not “medically necessary.” Chaste people are not suffering an epidemic of prostate cancer.
