If I’ve missed Mass one Sunday and go the following week can I take communion without going to confession? Is missing Sunday Mass a mortal sin? My husband believes it is a mortal sin. Please help. Thank you.

You have commited a mortal sin by not going to Sunday Mass.[it isn’t a mortal sin if you had a good reason for not going] If you go to communion this Sunday and you haven’t been to confession, yet you commit the sin of sacrilege and that is another mortal sin. Listen to me go to confession as fast as you can.

If it was in your control to attend Mass last Sunday and you chose not to attend and you had no serious reason like illness, or caring for another person who was ill. Then yes, it was a sin and you should attend Confession before receiving Holy Communion again.

AD60, if, when you missed Mass last Sunday, you honestly did not know it was mortally sinful, then one of the conditions for mortal sin was missing, and you did not commit a mortal sin. In order to commit a mortal sin, three things are necessary: Matter (the action must be seriously sinful - missing Mass is indeed seriously sinful), Advertance (knowing that the action is sinful) and Consent (freely doing the action in spite of your knowing its sinfulness).

To summarize: You have done something which is (in itself) seriously sinful. Whether or not you have personally committed a mortal sin can only be determined by an honest examination of conscience regarding whether or not you really knew it was wrong. If in doubt, go to Confession. Go to Confession anyway - it’s good for you. 🙂

Baltobetsy’s right. And remember, now that you know it’s a grave sin, missing Mass again (unless it’s not possible to attend) would be a mortal sin.

trust me… go to confession… then i will see you in the communion line on Sunday … 👍
