Is missing Mass on a holy day of obligation a mortal sin? I missed New Year’s Day Mass; I showed up but the service was at a different time. I stayed long enough to say a prayer but I don’t know if this fulfills the obligation.

Ordinarily, missing Mass on Sunday or a holy day of obligation without just cause constitutes grave matter. Full knowledge and deliberate consent of the will are required as well to constitute mortal sin.

If you missed Mass simply because you innocently mistaked the time Mass started, there was no sin because there was no intention on your part to skip Mass.
