So, I realized today at mass that Thursday is Ascension Thursday, which is a holy day of obligation. As I understand it, holy days are to be treated the same as Sundays, so you are required to go and it’s a sin not too, right? Well, here’s the thing…I completely forgot about this. And I’m scheduled to work during the time mass is to be held. I’m going to try and see if someone can work for me but it’s incredibly doubtful, as I’m the only one who can work Thursdays in my dept. So would it be a sin to miss this mass if I can’t find anyone else to work for me? I honestly forgot about this Thursday mass. I’m really worried about this. Anyone, help?

First thing I would check is to see if your local bishop has transferred it to Sunday. Very likely in the U.S. Whether that is a good or bad thing, I will leave alone.

Celia - We are never obliged to do the impossible. If it is vital to your employment, it is probably best to call your priest, explain the problem and ask for a dispensation.

I don’t know the availability of masses where you live. Is there a vigil mass Wednesday evening? An early morning mass Thursday? An evening mass Thursday?

Is there such a mass at another Catholic Church within a reasonable distance?

I don’t believe there is a mass Sunday, but I will check on that. Also, I didn’t even think about the Wed. vigil. Unfortunately I work Wed. evening as well  but, that might give me a better chance of getting someone to cover my shift. Thanks guys.

I guess I’ll just do the best I can. :whacky: If anyone else has comments, don’t hestitate…thanks

I am not sure cuz I really don’t go to that kind of special mass before. So if i have time i’ll probably attend it. depends on my schedule. i usually just go to church on sundays. which is once a week.

As already indicated, if you have to work and have already made extraordinary efforts to find another Mass and/or get out of your work obligation, you can be dispensed from the obligation.

It was also pointed out that in many areas of the USA, the celebration of the Ascension has been moved from the Thursday of the sixth week of Easter to the seventh Sunday of Easter. I know in my Archdiocese this is true, although I personally do not like it (but it is not my decision to make!). However, this could be very welcome news in your case.

My diocese transfered it to Sunday and there are no other options for me for Mass that day. So, no obligation on my part for Thursday as Mass attendance goes. But, I will pray some that day.

First, you are not sinning if you cannot get to Mass for a good reason.

Secondly, the US Bishops’ Conference allow the transfer of Ascension to Sunday at the Province level. So, check with your Diocese on whether it is a holy day. They may still be having Mass on that day at your church, but not celebrating the Ascension.
