I am 51 Yrs old and a cradle Catholic. I have had an annulment from my first marriage and now am seeking an annulment from my 21 yr. second marriage. I have gotten a hold of one of the people in my parish who handles annulments. I am afraid that she has me totally confused. She informed me that I was her first annulment. I told her that I had been married by a judge and that although my husband had become Catholic 12 yrs into our marriage the priest never blessed or did anything about our marriage or informed us that we had to do anything. She told me that something would have to be done about his 4 previous marriages and that there had to be a way to reach him. I have only an old cell number for him. When he left his family he went to another state. This man has abused me mentally, verbally, and physically. He is a very mean and mentally ill drunk. A person I know said he stated that he would fight an annulment. I only want peace. Is this going to be an uphill battle for me?

Based on this information, it sounds to me as though the nullity of your marriage may be established quite easily due to a defect of legitimate form - you attempted marriage outside the Church without a dispensation.

Since your marriage has never been convalidated (blessed), I suspect that an annulment can and should be handled through a simple Documentary Process which should not require the cooperation of your ex-husband. Contact your priest or pastor for more information.
