I have a question about calling people saints. My two-year-old daughter was tragically killed about a month ago. She had been baptized. I am wondering if it is proper for us to call her a saint and/or ask for her intercession since she died baptized before the age of reason. Any light you could shed upon this would be helpful. And, by the way, people keep calling her an angel, which I definitely know is not correct!

I am very sorry for your loss and pray that time and God’s grace will heal and comfort you.

If your daughter was baptized and only two years old at her death, then yes, she is in heaven. While I would not recommend calling her a saint – since it is the Church’s responsibility to grant that title to individuals – certainly you may pray for her intercession for yourself and your intentions.

And, yes, you are correct that your daughter is not an angel. Angels are an entirely different order of creature. Humans remain human after death; they do not change into angels.
