A few quick questions.

I grew up Protestant and not caring about faith, now I am thinking about being Catholic and asking myself some questions.

I dated a Catholic girl for a while, and would go to mass with her sometimes. When she’d go to take the Eucharist, she’d tell me “You can go up front to get a blessing if you want.” I’d stay behind in the pew. Then one day I decided to go ahead and do it. But I didn’t know what she meant by getting a blessing. So I ate the host instead. She was mad at me afterwards but I hadn’t known what I was doing. I read online that to take the eucharist when you are unworthy is a mortal sin, but also that for it to be a mortal sin you need full knowledge and full consent of the will. I did not know what I was doing, I was just obliviously trying to do the “right thing.” Did I sin?

Also, I would go talk to a priest resident/advisor on campus sometimes when I was in college and ask him, “Is this conversation private?” He’d say, I am a priest so if you talk to me under confession it is between you and me and God. So I’d say “Ok, this is under confession then” and talk to him privately about my problems. He never gave me penance or told me I was forgiven or anything like that…was it wrong for me to call it confession though? I didn’t know what I was doing.

This is my first post on this forum, so thanks for reading.

No, it sounds like it was a misunderstanding, so no intento to do wrong was involved, no martal sin.
I have only seen little children who accompany their parents in communion receive the blessing your girlfriend was advising you to recieve. As an adult, they would expect you to be receiving communion.
I would suggest that you and your girlfriend together attend the RCIA class in the nearest parish to the campus. It is both a class to initiate and receive converts as well as teach Catholics who have fallen away and refresh their faith. If you thinking about becoming a Catholic, this would be the course of study you would want to participate in, in order to make a fully informed decision.

Welcome!!

In order for a sin to be mortal, it must meet three conditions:
Code:
* Mortal sin is a sin of grave matter
* Mortal sin is committed** with full knowledge of the sinner**
* Mortal sin is committed with deliberate consent of the sinner
A priest can speak with you in confidence, but he cannot give you absolution and will not give you a penance if you are not Catholic.

Keep speaking with the priest. RCIA will begin again in the fall. You could ask the priest in your local parish.

I suggest reading the Catechism. You can find it online at:
usccb.org/catechism/text/

Daily Mass readings at:
usccb.org/nab/

The NAB Bible on line at:
usccb.org/nab/bible/index.shtml

Much more information on this site, too, as well as on:
ewtn.com/

Keep asking questions!

God bless.

Welcome to CAF!

Regarding your first question, there is a moratorium regarding the topic of blessings in lieu of receivng Holy Communion. Your former girlfriend made a mistake in encouraging you to go. Please read the sticky regardinding the moratorium. You will get your answer there, along with the pertinent document from the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. Here is the link for you:

Because there is a moratorium on the topic, I cannot say much more than that.

Concerning your second question, you can have a private, confidential meeting with the priest, but, because you are not Catholic, he cannot give you absolution.

As others indicated, you can contact the priest to inquire about RCIA.
