I know that Notre Dame is considered a Catholic school, but a lot of times what is being taught in certain classes doesn’t always jive with orthodox teachings of the church. It seems like a lot of students coming out of Catholic colleges don’t know a thing about the church. Does anyone know why this is?

Hi Teles,

Welcome to the Forums.

What is it specifically about Notre Dame that gave you concern? Do you know someone who goes there?

Well yeah, my cousin went there and another cousin went to Santa Clare. Not to be judgemental, but it seems like neither one have a conservative view in there body about the Church’s teachings either. Then, around a year ago I got a letter from the CRC in California that mentioned a Bishop that went to make a speech at a “Catholic University” and the professor of theology walked out when the bishop mentioned an issue of abortion or some other serious teaching of the Church. This just got me thinking, that most students that go to these big colleges may not be there because the school is Catholic, but for the reputation of the school.

A student could go to Notre Dame or any other large Catholic university and not learn much about religion at all - let alone Catholicism - depending on their major and classes they take. This doesn’t really mean anything about the school being a good or bad Catholic school.

Notre Dame is troublesome because they have refused to comply with Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the Church’s requirement that at Catholic colleges and universities, the theology and religion faculty must, at a minimum, be Catholic and not teach heresy. But to be fair to ND, there are a lot more “Catholic” colleges in the US that have ignored Ex Corde than have complied so they aren’t unique in this.

There have been several universities and colleges recently that have been told by Church authorities that they were so far gone that they couldn’t publically call themselves Catholic any more. ND hasn’t been given that ultimatum (yet!). So technically, it is still a Catholic university, but if I was sending a child there, I would be very wary. There are definately some wolves in sheeps clothing in the facutly. At a secular university the wolves are mostly “out of the closet” and easier to identify. 😃
