I know that’s when it’s celebrated in the Lutheran Church so I wondered if Nov 1 was also the Catholic All Saints Day? If so, it is a day where one must go to mass? Is the service the same length as a normal Sunday mass?

Yep; not required to go to mass b/c it falls on a mon, if the church does hold a special service it would be like a sunday mass, but the churches around me are doing their regular weekday services. 😦

Except when Nov. 1 falls on a Saturday or Monday, it is a Holyday of Obligation in the United States.

This year, since it falls on a Monday, it is not a Holyday of Obligation. BUT, the Mass celebrated on Monday is that of All Saints, regardless of its status as a Holyday or not.

If, on Monday, your parish is celebrating a ferial (weekday) Mass instead, you need to politely complain to your pastor and explain to him that he is grossly mistaken.

Normally, Nov 1 is a Holy Day of Obligation. However, at least in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, if a Holy Day of Obligation falls on a Saturday or a Monday, it is not.

However, saying that, I like how my pastor describes these cases as “Holy Days of Opportunity”

Yes, November 1st is the Solemnity of All Saints in the Catholic Church. Novmeber 2 is All Soul’s Day. This year All Saints is not a holy day of obligation because in the US certain holy days are transfered to Sunday when they fall on a Saturday or Monday. But it is still celebrated, Catholics are just not obligated to attend Mass on that day.

The US Holy Days of Obligation are:

All Sundays
Jan 1, Mary, Mother of God
Ascencion Thursday (transferred to Sunday on a Diocese by Diocese basis)
August 15, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin
November 1, All Saints
December 8, Immaculate Conception
December 25, Christmas

The following Holy Days of Obligation are transferred to Sunday whenever they fall on a Saturday or Monday in the US: January 1, Solemnity of Mary Mother of God; August 15, Assumption; and November 1, All Saints.

Immaculate Conception and Christmas are never transfered, they are always days of obligation.

Thank you. One more question… what is the difference between All Saints Day and All Souls Day? (I’ve not heard of the 2nd one…)

The feast of All Saints on Nov 1 honors all saints, known and unknown. Saints are those in Heaven, those already admitted to the Beatific Vision.

On All Souls Day, Nov 2, we pray with and for all the holy souls not yet admitted to the Beatific Vision. These are the souls in Purgatory.

Since the Lutheran confession excludes the doctrine of purgatory, I’m sure that’s why you have not heard of it.

You can read about these topics, and others, at:

I’d just like to point out for anyone to whom it applies, All Saints’ Day is NOT a holy day of obligation under any circumstances in Canada. In Canada the holy days of obligation (besides every Sunday of course) are:
Jan 1-Mary, Mother of God
Dec 25-Christmas

(Yes, the CCCB goes easy on us :)).

Carol,

1 November is All Saints day in the Roman Catholic Church. The Eastern Catholic Churches (at least those of the Byzantine tradition) celebrate All Saints on the 1st Sunday after Pentecost.
