carol marie:
I know that’s when it’s celebrated in the Lutheran Church so I wondered if Nov 1 was also the Catholic All Saints Day? If so, it is a day where one must go to mass? Is the service the same length as a normal Sunday mass? (Sorry, this probably doesn’t belong in “apologetics” but I wanted to be sure someone answered since I’m posting it on Oct. 31)
Yes, November 1st is the Solemnity of All Saints in the Catholic Church. Novmeber 2 is All Soul’s Day. This year All Saints is not a holy day of obligation because in the US certain holy days are transfered to Sunday when they fall on a Saturday or Monday. But it is still celebrated, Catholics are just not obligated to attend Mass on that day.
The US Holy Days of Obligation are:
All Sundays
Jan 1, Mary, Mother of God
Ascencion Thursday (transferred to Sunday on a Diocese by Diocese basis)
August 15, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin
November 1, All Saints
December 8, Immaculate Conception
December 25, Christmas
The following Holy Days of Obligation are transferred to Sunday whenever they fall on a Saturday or Monday in the US: January 1, Solemnity of Mary Mother of God; August 15, Assumption; and November 1, All Saints.
Immaculate Conception and Christmas are never transfered, they are always days of obligation.
