My online classes just started last week, my christian teacher told us that we have to attend LIVE mass not REPLAY mass. But we’ve (my family) been attending replay mass since the pandemic started. I am from the Philippines by the way, I’m unable to go outside because I’m so young. And mass is still not allowed. If live mass on televisions (before the pandemic) is not valid. And now the Church considers online mass as valid, why did my teacher consider REPLAY mass as invalid?

A previously recorded mass is no less “valid” than a live broadcast. Neither is able to fulfill the Sunday obligation. Most bishops have dispensed the obligation.

I suppose that is true, I really wanna go to mass so bad. But it seems like the law outlawed us. CBCP told us to be obedient to government orders for our health and less people will get the corona virus.Sorry for bad english grammar, I’m not very fluent in english.

For what purpose?

I’m not sure what you mean by “valid”. Valid for what?

The mass is a valid mass if the priest validly conducts it.

As far as watching it, live or recorded,
that has nothing to do with being “valid” or “invalid”.

If what your teacher is trying to say is a live online/TV mass fulfills then obligation and a recorded mass doesn’t, that is incorrect. Neither fulfills the obligation.

But when we cannot go to mass we do not have an obligation. And during COVID most bishops have dispensed the obligation.

No need to apologize for your grammar. You are doing better than many Americans ☺️

The obligation requires physical presence.

Latin Canon Law
Can. 1248 §1. A person who assists at a Mass celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite either on the feast day itself or in the evening of the preceding day satisfies the obligation of participating in the Mass.
§2. If participation in the eucharistic celebration becomes impossible because of the absence of a sacred minister or for another grave cause, it is strongly recommended that the faithful take part in a liturgy of the word if such a liturgy is celebrated in a parish church or other sacred place according to the prescripts of the diocesan bishop or that they devote themselves to prayer for a suitable time alone, as a family, or, as the occasion permits, in groups of families.
Plenary Indulgences for devoutly following a live broadcast:
  • Grant 4: Papal or bishop blessing (Per Norm 7.2 at the conclusion of Mass) broadcast (live) when unable to attend physically
  • Grant 13: Papal Way of the Cross broadcast (live)
  • Grant 17: Papal Rosary broadcast (live)
Norm 21. Unless otherwise stated, an indulgence cannot be gained by a work already imposed by law or precept. … [except] a work which has been imposed as a sacramental penance … [and] pious works already obligatory by reason of their rules and constitutions or by precept.

Plenary Indulgence for those who are ill with COVID-19
  • Unite spiritually through the media to the celebration of Holy Mass, the recitation
of the Holy Rosary, to the pious practice of the Way of the Cross or other forms
    of devotion.

I live in the Philippines too (Manila). Mass obligations have been dispensed with.

Please tell me if I understand correctly:

the online Holy Mass does not replace that of presence, even in time of Covid 19, unless the diocesan bishop prescribes it;

if the bishop does not give binding indications to his faithful, each can freely choose what to do on the basis of article 1248 § 2.

I would be grateful for a clarification because then it happens in turn that I have to clarify other people.

For the Latin Church Eucharistic celebration meets the obligation, however vespers may meet the requirement for eastern Catholics per their particular canon laws. So then there are different situations that occur that obstruct the liturgical celebration to meet the obligation:
  • One is sick or injured or is caring for others or must work or cannot get there.
  • The bishop mandated suspension of liturgies.
For recommendation:
  • There is no priest available but there is a liturgy of the word.
  • There is no priest available and no liturgy of the word. (Such as a bishop mandated COVID19 suspension of liturgies.)
So for all of the above the obligation of the liturgy does not exist. The viewing of broadcast Mass does not suffice to meet the obligation.

Our bishop wrote:
“‘Should I stay home from church, even though the church is open? In his chapter on the Holy Eucharist, St. Paul says, ‘Let each one examine himself.’ If you think you are contagious, or if you think you are in danger, you are dispensed from any obligations to attend. Please stay home if you do not feel well.’”

You should be fine.

The Church does not ask us to do the impossible.

Another poster has said that the mass obligation has been lifted in the Philippines.

You may or may not choose to watch online mass, live or not.

As many have stated, the Church has currently lifted the Mass obligation in the Philippines so you don’t have to attend Mass in person, and you are also not required by the Church to watch any Mass on video whether it’s live or replay.

However, it’s not clear to me from your post whether the teacher is requiring you to watch Mass as some sort of school study assignment. If so, then you follow your teacher’s directions for the assignment; just be aware it’s an assignment from your teacher, not an obligation from the Church.
