I need to lose weight. Doesn’t sound like a topic for your forum, but it may be a problem that many, like me, have fallen into and now need the help of God to correct. Is overeating the sin of gluttony?
While gluttony is usually defined as “the excessive indulgence in food and drink” (source), I think it would be a mistake to limit “gluttony” to overeating. Gluttony, defined more broadly, could be understood to mean any excessive personal indulgence in something that damages the body or spirit when done to excess. The opposing virtue to the vice of gluttony is temperance, which “may be defined as the righteous habit which makes a man govern his natural appetite for pleasures of the senses in accordance with the norm prescribed by reason” (source).
