Is praying to saints necomancy?

I have been studying the Catholic Church with interest. One of my hurdles is praying to saints. I have just finished reading the Catechism of the Catholic Church, but feel I need further explanation. My question is as follows: What is the difference in a person praying to saints and people who try to “contact the dead,” etc.?
