Is "pretending" morally acceptable in order to expose truth?

Hello,

There are many well known examples of people being willing to do (or actually doing) evil and illegal things “under the table” when others, that are just pretending to want “that,” only seek to expose them with hidden audio or video devices or whatnot.

One of the greatest, most recent and widely known of these cases is when Planned Parenthood’s ever-crooked intentions were consistently exposed in this manner by undercover people posing as either seeking abortion or buying aborted baby body parts.

Are investigative/undercover journalism and similar exposure-seeking attempts ever morally acceptable?
