Is purgatory a doctrine of the Catholic Church?

I have asked two different priests about purgatory and they both do not believe in it, stating it is not part of the doctrine of the Catholic church. They have never mentioned purgatory at any mass during the last 30 yrs. How do we know there is a purgatory?
