One weekend while visiting my parents, I wanted to go to confession before Mass. The two priests at the Parish are both incredible priests, but are very strict in matters relating to the proper order and execution of the Sacraments, as I observed by attending their masses while visiting my parents.
My father had informed me that both were always pretty tough in the confessional booth, and I can vouch that the priest I confessed to lived up to his reputation. I couldn’t get away with using vague terms or non-specific amounts during the confession. They would ask what specifically I was referring to, or exactly how many times I had committed a sin.
To be honest, it was the intense confession I’ve ever had, and the priest knocked me around pretty good (metaphorically, of course) regarding my sinful habits, but he also instructed me on ways I can avoid the temptation to sin. After being absolved, I walked out and realized that the amount of fear and nervousness entering the confessional was only outmatched by the immense relief I felt after completing my penance.
The thing to remember is that confession is a way to cleanse your soul, and the priests serve as ‘doctors.’ It may be scary, but do you want the guy who lets you diagnose yourself and says “Sounds right - take some advil”, or would your soul benefit more from someone who pokes and prods to the very heart of the matter and can give you proper treatment?
