Basically the question is just the topic. I’m a new Catholic (just got Confirmed last week!) so I still struggle to understand at times the difference between a venial and a mortal sin. I would’ve thought just exchanging provocative pictures may be venial because it is less than fornication but then again I know all sins against chastity are serious

Edit: Sorry, should’ve clarified but no it was not my spouse I’m not married.
Also for the record I am going to go to confession for this anyway, but I was just wondering as to the graveness of it.

My first question is “who are you sending them
to?” Obviously it’s quite different if it’s your spouse. Second question is “how provocative are we talking?” A little flirty is probably fine. Nudes obviously are not.

Whether it’s mortal or course depends on the persons knowledge and consent, but it seems to me that it’s at least potentially grave matter.

Presumably you’re sending such pictures in hopes of making the other person feel desire for you.
You’re leading them into sin, which is wrong.
Whether venial or mortal depends on your knowledge and intent as well as the degree of provocativeness of the photo and perhaps other factors like whether you are married to the person or not.

We cannot give you a bright-line rule for this and you should take such questions to your priest.
The same goes for the dozens of other “is this a mortal sin?” questions we get on the forum weekly…people should be asking their priest, not strangers, and also, ALL sin is bad and should be avoided, not just mortal sin.

Catholic or not, why would you be sending “provocative” pictures of yourself to anyone??? That can be dangerous, and it’s irresponsible to put pictures out there that can become public at any moment!

And what do you mean by “provocative”?

This is a super bad idea. Never send or post a photo that you do not want displayed on a billboard in the middle of town.

As far as sin, the reason for sending these pictures is to incite lust. Do you think that is a holy action?
