Is sexual impurity a sin even if you didn't mean to do it?

Hi, I was just wondering if sexual impurity (masturbation) is a sin even if you unconsciously do it, like it your sleep? This was really bothering me and I wasn’t sure about it. I know that this is a very serious sin if you consent to it and do it consciously and willingly, but I just didn’t know about this.

I sometimes have the same problem. But when your fast asleep 98% of the time you dont know what’s going on. One of the Main roots of sin is consciousness. I don’t think God will hold it against you. Don’t get too hard on yourself, remember what Jesus said: *“The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh weak.” Matthew 26:41

if you’re doing something in your sleep, its a sign of a deeper problem. perhaps it has become a habit so much in the past? no need to answer that. i suggest more prayer and meditation to get it out from your subconcious
 
I agree that is possibly true, but not neccesarily, in fact it can be the opposite as well. Our bodies are made to function so that we “release” ourselves occasionally, and we actually STOP that process through masturbation or intercourse. So having a sexual dream could be a sign of purity, not impurity. In either case it is not sinful in and of itself, any more than sleepwalking and accidentally stepping on the dog or tossing and turning and thus slugging your partner hehe. Those would be sinful if you were concious but if not, then no. Truth be told, most of us posting have done alot worse anyway even while awake!

I am not discounting to search your heart, as the poster says, for deeper issues, but I am just saying do not condemn yourself or worry unneccesarily either. Ask our Lord for discernment and Our Lady as well. But do not allow yourself to be trapped by worry or fear that you are in sin by this alone. You aren’t.
 
It is worth noting that a number of the Church Fathers, particularly the monastics, did in fact hold that wet dreams are a sin. I think their position has been discredited by theology, but it’s still worth noting. They are certainly irritating, and they are a reminder that, however good you are, you are still bound up by what St. Augustine called the “glue of lust”.

But, no, nocturnal emissions are not generally held to be something that you need to bring to confession. I certainly haven’t. It might possibly be a sign that there are other problems in your waking life, such as a tendency to lust, and that’s worth considering in your next examination of conscience. But it’s more likely that it’s totally beyond your control, so don’t worry about it. I’ve had dreams where I was a murderer, but all it meant was I was feeling a little stressed out in real life, not that I was really just as bad as a murderer.

And, like StephenFrancis says, the vast majority of young men have done (or habitually do) deliberate masturbation while awake, even when they know it’s wrong and they want to stop. So say a prayer of thanks to God that you’re not in that situation, and don’t beat yourself up over a very small, questionably problematic thing.

I’m very sorry for the confusion, I probably should have mentioned this in the first place but I’m a girl. But I suppose the same answer holds true?

Yes. Every sin is a conscious decision to move away from God. You cannot do that in your sleep. You must become conscious at some point to know that you are doing this. If you continue then it could be sinful but it probably would not be a mortal sin since the compulsion started in your sleep. Anyway, I always say that if something bothers you then mention it in confession. At least your mind will be at ease. Satan always wants us to believe that we are in sin so that we give up on the infinite mercy and love of God. We do not want to do that… God bless…teachccd 🙂

Oh no, it’s alright, that was my fault. But I still feel bad about this. Maybe I should bring it to Confession? But the thing is that I went to Confession a couple of weeks ago and confessed this sin, and I’m embarassed to go back to the same priest and say it again. I know that he is here to help and encourage God’s love and forgiveness and that he won’t judge me. Is that just a natural human emotion I’m having? But I really feel that I should bring this to Confession…

Yup, the same answer holds true.

If it really bothers you, bring it to Confession and ask your priest. (That’s what I do, whenever something like that bothers me - and I’m a girl too, so I know how embarrassing it can sometimes be.)

Yes, it really can be :). But I do trust this priest a lot and I’m kind of over that factor…it just feels wierd to bring the same sin to Confession within two weeks of the last one…

It does…I know…(I can remember once bringing the same sin to Confession 2 weeks in a row.) :o

I think I may bring it Confession…I mean I just feel totally horrible. When I feel like I’m not at peace with sins and stuff like that, I just don’t feel at peace with anything. This problem is ruining my week because I just feel so bad…😦

Exactly! That’s what Confession is for! (And doesn’t it feel great to walk out the confessional door afterwards?) 😃

Yes it does! I guess being a little embarassed in Confession is much better than not being with Jesus. 🙂
