Is sterilization allowed for medical reasons?

I’m wondering whether sterilization is acceptable if a dangerous underlying genetic defect, more narrowly something like BRCA is present.
Genes like BRCA predispose people to aggressive breast and reproductive cancers and currently the only known “magic bullet” against it is breast removal and sterilization.
