Is Sunday Mass attendance really required?

I have read a number of articles and opinions regarding the requirements to attend mass on Sundays for Catholics. All indicate that it is a sin to miss mass, yet I cannot find that requirement in my scripture or any clear reasoning for this requirement. Can a person not keep the Sabbith holy without attemding mass? Also, most articles indicate that a catholic is required to take eucharist only on holy days of obligation? If that is the case than are those the days of required attendance or are they in addition to every Sunday? Please direct me to the specific dogma or scripture that can give me the answer.
