Here is the thing. I am a VERY VERY ordinary person. I am not smart at all. Not stupid either, just It takes me some time to understand things. But lately I’ve been noticing things that actually amazing me. Like when challenged about somethings about the faith, I start to answer with what I’ve been learning, then end up saying something that I’ve never heard before. Later I discover that a saint said something similar or the church teaches the same thing, I’ve just never read it before!

Thing is when this happen, in my head I think (WOW! I finally get that, or WOW! This makes so much sense). Sometime As I’m talking about something and I recite a verse from the Bible, that verse at that moments takes a much deeper meaning than what I originally wanted to talk about, then words start coming out of my mouth that I’ve never thought about before.

So my question is, is that how the Holy Spirit inspires us? Using the knowledge we have gained from prayer and study then turning it into something that makes much more sense? (BTW I’ve been studying a lot lately).

However I’d like to say this happens to me all the time. But no. Most of the time when I’m challenged I feel being attacked and end up attacking with words instead of trying to explain calmly. But sometimes when I’m calm and happy, someone challenges me and suddenly I start saying things I’ve never heard of before. Or at least form my answer in a way that I’ve never heard.

If that is the Holy Spirit, what other ways does He inspire us?

First of all you as a Catholic can from time to time feel the influence of the Holy Spirit, however you have not been baptized by someone who has the priesthood, you simply haven’t, your faith in your h/father and christ and the spirit are dependent on a deity that is 1, not 3, they are 3, not 1, but they are 3 supporting each other. The lies and half truths perpetuated down the ages are now part of your belief, even though there are fine very smart men in the R. C church, it still is a church that has burned its saints and people have paid money to priests to have the sins taken away of their dead, one of the most comical of practices. Our Father in Heaven knew that shortly after christ died that the apostles to would die and the P. would be lost, it is even prophesied in the scriptures, and the main thing that happened was the birth and the work down by our savior and his death, the fact is that if you look at men and women for centuries after you can see that the C church did horrid things, meaning that if the pope actually had the keys of the priesthood there would be order down to the priest of each small church, but there wasn’t, so we have all studied this in history, and that was my major. Being taught by nuns in the 60’s in a C. school I got a great education and a fear of God. I know without a shadow of a doubt that the so called Book of Mormon is from God, given to J. Smith to translate, I found I had relatives who knew him in Missouri where they were kicked out and an extermination order was from Gov Boggs, and the things that transpired over that time and in the SL valley were indeed things that could only have been done by men who had the priesthood. It is not a paid clergy. If you obtain the book, you could read it and the power of it through the holy ghost would come through, then with a testimony of that you can be baptized with efficacy and you would then be able to hold the priesthood yourself. Yes and the Holy Ghost would then be your constant companion, and believe me you will know when it speaks to you, being humble and hungering after the scriptures reading them and then obtaining that gift is worth more than all the gold of this world, the joy you obtain in the waters of baptism is indescribable , don’t take my word, think outside the box and then you will be clear on what the spirit is trying to teach you.

I have never myself experienced this form of epiphany, however you might discern its origin by its content. If you speak the truth and find a facility of tongue that is surprising you might talk through your conversations with a priest to ensure the validity of such a gift.
I cannot tell you the cause, but never ignore the possibility of action of the Holy Spirit.
I would not normally try to respond with so little understanding myself, however I felt the post needed something more than the heartfelt and honourable attempt by the Mormon poster. Our prayers are for those that have possibly lost the faith to be reunited with the truth in the Holy Spirit.
I would seriously suggest you talk through your discernment with a wise priest.

Acquiring the Holy Spirit

(from the Saint’s Conversation with Motovilov)

The true goal of our Christian life consists of acquiring God’s Holy Spirit. Fasting and vigil, prayer, mercy, and every other good deed performed for Christ — are means for acquiring the Holy Spirit of God. Only deeds performed for Christ give us the fruits of the Holy Spirit.

Some say that the foolish virgins lacking enough oil in their lamps is meant to be understood as a lack of good deeds (see Mt. 25:1-12). Such an understanding is not completely correct. How could there have been a lack of good deeds when they, though foolish, are still called virgins? For virginity is the highest virtue, as a state equal to the angels, and could by itself serve in place of all other virtues. I, the wretched, think that they did not have enough of the grace of the All-Holy Spirit of God. These virgins, because of their spiritual injudiciousness, supposed in performing good deeds that it is only necessary to do good works to be a Christian: “We performed a good deed and thus did God’s will.” Whether or not they had received the grace of the Holy Spirit, whether they had attained it, they did not even bother to find out … But, this acquiring of the Holy Spirit is in fact that oil which the foolish virgins lacked. They are called foolish because they forgot about the essential fruit of virtue — the grace of the Holy Spirit — without which there is no salvation for anyone and cannot be. For “through the Holy Spirit every soul is quickened, and through its purification, it is exalted and illumined by the Triune Unity in a Holy mystery.” The Holy Spirit Himself settles in our souls, and this occupation of our souls by Him, the All-Ruling, and this coexistence of our spirit with His One Trinity, is granted only through the diligent acquiring, on our part, of the Holy Spirit, which prepares, in our soul and body, the throne for the coexistence of God the All-Creator with our spirit, by the immutable word of God: “And I will walk among you and will be your God, and ye shall be my people” (Lev. 26:12).

This is the very oil in the lamps of the wise virgins, which burned brightly and steadily; the virgins with these burning lamps could await the Groom coming at midnight, and enter the chamber of joy with him. The foolish ones, seeing their lamps going out, though they went to the market to buy oil, did not manage to return in time, for the doors were already locked. The market is our life; the doors of the bridal chamber — locked and not permitting entrance to the Groom — human death, the virgins wise and foolish, Christian souls; the oil, not deeds, but the grace of the All Holy Spirit of God received through them, transforming from decay to incorruption, from emotional death into spiritual life, from darkness to light, from the manger of our existence, where our passions are tied like beasts and animals, into a church of God, into the all-lighted chamber of eternal joy in Jesus Christ.

It sounds to me like your studies are getting beyond your head and into your heart, and you are experiencing feedback from that. I study a lot, too, and I like to leave the audio New Testament playing when I’m not listening to something else … that way it sneaks in and catches me unaware even when I’m not paying attention.

So your head brings up old teachings, but then something comes out directly and it is wonderful. I get that when I’m typing sometimes; I’ll not know what I’m going to type until I see it on the screen, or at least that’s what it seems like. :compcoff:

This is exciting to me because I’d guess that your “heart” and “mind” are synchronizing. The only caution is that it can get weird when one’s head gets reprogrammed to throw off society’s “Matrix” – like the Dark Night of the Soul (St. John of the Cross) type stuff. But you come across as pretty level-headed so maybe it will go nicely for you! 🙂

I frequently seem to have the opposite, where a teaching becomes so clear to my heart but I cannot find words to express my understanding. Every once in a while, though, God brings the words to me.

I’m not sure I could talk about this with a priest. I’m very shy, and though I love the priests at my Parish, I do not think they are wise enough to know about this. That’s why I came here to ask about it.

As for the truth about the Catholic Church. I have no doubt whatsoever in my heart that it is the one true Church established by Christ. 6 months ago I knew almost nothing about our faith and I was this close to leaving the Church. I was also sick, Jesus found me, healed me and brought be right back to the CC. I’ve learned so much, even the things that I knew before and didn’t understand seems to make much more sense.

But that moment when I start to talk about what I’ve learned and start saying something that surprises me! If that is not the Holy Spirit then I’m smarter than I thought.

Thank you all for your answers.

Our great task in life is to surrender fully to “thy will be done” instead of “my will be done”…be cautious about thinking too much about how smart you are or not. Simply find gratitude if the spirit is moving you to do the Lords work. Peace…

I’ve had similar experiences. I couldn’t tell you if it is truly the Holy Spirit flowing through you and inspiring you, or if it’s just your brain aligning the pieces in the same way as some of the Saints or other learned scholars. Either way, rejoice that God is teaching you or using you in such a way, and rejoice in the universal Church, and then go on to read that particular Saint–it may be that you’re being tugged toward that person for a particular reason, but not always. I’ve found much food for thought and prayer through that.

Also, just a word of advice: when you feel challenged or attacked, take a breath and say a prayer, then pray your answer–I’ve found that that helps to keep the Holy Spirit in the conversation and allow it to remain a discussion that’s charitable and fruit-bearing. 🙂

Sounds like you have been blessed with the Gift of the Holy Ghost called Understanding. The Holy Ghost can inspire us with other gifts, like the gifts of Counsel and Knowledge. God bless you.

… and the gift of Wisdom.

I wish I could say it happens to me all the time, but it doesn’t. Only happens on my good days (when I’m moved by the love and will of God instead of my own will). Which is very hard to do, but I’m working on it.

Thanks all for your replies. 🙂
