Is the 1984 Roman Catechism "warning us?"

The Roman Catechism, Translated and Annotated in Accord with Vatican II and Post-Conciliar Documents and the New Code of Canon Law, by Robert I. Bradley, S.J. and Eugene Kevane. Boston, Massachusetts: St. Paul Editions, 1984, is a fascinating resource book.

On page 97, for example, we start "Chapter 9, on The Ninth Article of the Apostles’ Creed: I believe … the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints."

"1. Importance of Explaining This Article Carefully

"It will not be difficult to see how careful the pastor should be in explaining this Ninth Article to the faithful (see 1 Jn 3:1 and 2 P 1:4), if we pay attention to the following important reasons:

"First: As St. Augustine observes, commenting on Ps 30, the prophets spoke more plainly and explicitly of the Church than of Christ.

"For they foresaw that a much greater number may err and be deceived regarding the Church than on the mystery of the incarnation.

“Later times were to behold wicked men, imitative as the ape that would like to pass for a human being, who arrogate to themselves exclusively the name of Catholic; with shameless effrontery, they assert that the Catholic Church is to be found only with them.”

The Church’s ultimate trial
**675 **Before Christ’s second coming the Church must pass through a final trial that will shake the faith of many believers. The persecution that accompanies her pilgrimage on earth will unveil the “mystery of iniquity” in the form of a religious deception …at the price of apostasy from the truth. The supreme religious deception is that … man glorifies himself in place of God and of his Messiah come in the flesh.

There are two possibilities in interpreting this excerpt from The 1984 Catechism:

a) They are warning of schismatic groups, for example the Sedevacantists, who will try to say that they alone are the true Catholic Church.

or,

b) This is ecumenism at its worst, where the authors are trying to make a clear separation between the visible Church under the Successor to St. Peter and the Church of Christ.

I suspect that latter is what the authors are trying to get at. Unfortunately if this is the case, then this Catechism should not be used for it is heretical. You cannot say that the Church of Christ is not solely the visible Catholic Church, for the Church of Christ alone has the fullness of Our Lord’s teachings and all the gifts that can be recieved through the Sacraments, yet outside of the visible Catholic Church are many contradicitng Doctrines and teachings (although some truth as well, but not the fullness of it). Therefore, to say that the Church of Christ is given to those outside of the visible Catholic Church is to fall into the heresy of Relativism- something that even recent Popes have warned us about.
